Your period was two months late, and you panicked.

You bought a pregnancy test at forty nine, hands shaking a little in the drugstore aisle.

Negative. You took a second one the next morning, just to be sure. Also negative.

Relief came first, then confusion. Your body used to run on a schedule you could set a clock by.

Now it just skips, with no warning, no pattern you can find.

Nothing is wrong with you… So here's what's actually happening when a whole cycle just doesn't show up.

Every cycle, your brain sends a signal, FSH, asking your ovaries to grow and release an egg on schedule.

Picture a factory that gets the order every month but, some months, just doesn't open. In late perimenopause, your ovaries sometimes don't respond to that signal at all. No egg grows, no ovulation happens, and the whole shipment, your period, simply doesn't ship that month… About 1 in 5 cycles at this stage are anovulatory, and gaps of 60 days or more are considered a normal marker of this specific stage.

Factory closed, nothing ships. That's the two months that passed with nothing.

Read this part twice
A skipped period at this stage isn't your body failing to run on schedule anymore. It's a specific, documented signal that you've moved further into the transition. The silence itself is information, not a malfunction.

No one tells you a 60 day gap is actually a recognized marker, not just random irregularity to worry over…

But researchers use exactly this pattern to define the late stage of the transition. You're not off schedule. You're right on a different one.

A few things that may help, starting tonight
Keep testing for pregnancy until you're sure. Ovulation can still happen even after a long gap, so don't assume you're safe from pregnancy based on skipped cycles alone.
Track gaps, not just bleeding days. Note the length of each gap between periods. A pattern of 60 plus day stretches tells your doctor exactly where you are.
Ask about contraception that fits this stage. If you're not trying to conceive, ask specifically about options safe for irregular, unpredictable cycles at this age.
Report bleeding after 12 full months without one. That's the one pattern that always needs prompt evaluation, unlike the skips themselves.

Diane vs. the Internet

Your feed is selling ovulation predictor kits to figure out if you're "still fertile" during the skips…

Here's the grain of truth. These kits can detect a hormone surge when ovulation does happen, and it still sometimes does at this stage.

So the kit isn't useless. It can't tell you when your last cycle ever will be, since that's only clear in hindsight.

A kit reads today. It can't read the finish line.

The words to bring to your appointment
“My periods have started skipping two or more months at a time. Is this the late stage of perimenopause, and do I still need contraception right now?”

Of course, any bleeding after a full year with none needs a prompt check, so don't ignore that specific pattern. Track the gaps, then trust them…

Mark today on your calendar. Just today.
